One-kilo coffee packs, bread bags, bulk rice packaging… The side gusset bag looks simple, but functionally it is one of the most efficient flexible packaging formats.
What is a side gusset?
A side gusset is an inward fold on both side edges of the bag. When empty, the bag lies flat and thin; when filled, the gussets open and the pack gains depth. As a result, it holds much more product than a flat bag of the same width.
Benefits of side gusset bags
Volume efficiency: Provides high volume with a narrow front panel and takes up little space in cartons and on shelves.
Economical construction: Generally more economical than formats such as flat bottom and quattro seal.
Flexible use: Suitable for both retail and bulk/institutional packaging.
Easy closing options: Can be heat-sealed at the top, or folded and closed with a tin tie or label.
Suitable products
- Coffee (especially large sizes such as 500 g – 1 kg)
- Tea
- Rice, pulses and flour
- Bread and bakery products
- Pet food
- HORECA and bulk consumption products
- Industrial granules and powders
Choosing the structure for your product
Side gusset bags can be made from a single-layer clear film or from a multi-layer barrier structure:
- Bread and short shelf-life products: Clear, single-layer structures are often sufficient.
- Coffee and aroma-sensitive products: High-barrier structures, with a valve if needed, are preferred.
- Bulk dry food: Structures with high mechanical strength and puncture resistance stand out.
Side gusset or quattro seal?
The two formats can look similar. The key difference is that in a quattro seal bag the four vertical corners are also sealed, giving it a sharp, stable shape. If cost and volume are the priority, choose side gusset; if shelf shape matters most, quattro seal stands out.
Frequently asked questions
Does a side gusset bag stand up on the shelf? When full it can often stand upright, but because the base is not flat, this largely depends on how it is filled. If a guaranteed upright stance is needed, flat bottom or quattro seal formats are worth considering.
Can the gussets be printed? Yes. Gusset panels can be used as additional print space.
