What Are PE Bags? LDPE vs HDPE Bags and Their Uses

Types of polyethylene (PE) bags, the difference between LDPE and HDPE, choosing thickness and industrial applications. Porpack PE packaging guide.

From factory to warehouse, food production to textiles, polyethylene (PE) bags are among the most fundamental industrial packaging products. But “PE bag” is not a single product: if the resin type, thickness and format are not chosen correctly, you either pay for more than you need or the bag doesn’t do its job.

Why is polyethylene so common?

Polyethylene is flexible, moisture-resistant, easy to seal and economical. Single-layer PE bags, made from a single material family, are also relatively simple structures in terms of recycling.

LDPE and HDPE: two different characters

Property LDPE (Low density) HDPE (High density)
Feel Soft, flexible Stiffer, crinkly
Clarity More transparent Usually semi-matte
Elongation High Lower
Strength at low gauge Medium High
Typical use Protective bags, liners, heavy-duty bags Thin but strong bags, carrier-type bags

In short, if flexibility and clarity are required, LDPE stands out; if high strength at low thickness is needed, HDPE is the choice. In some applications a blend of the two is used.

Why does thickness matter?

Thickness should be determined by the load the bag will carry, whether the product has sharp edges, and the storage conditions. A bag thinner than necessary leads to tearing and product loss; a bag thicker than necessary means unnecessary material cost. The product weight and how the bag will be used are enough to determine the right thickness.

Common PE bag formats

  • Flat bag: Uniform, multi-purpose protection and packaging.
  • Gusseted bag: For bulky products and use inside cartons.
  • Liner bag: Protects products from moisture and dirt inside cartons, drums or sacks.
  • Printed bag: Carries branding, warnings or product information.

Applications

  • Protection of raw materials and semi-finished goods in food production
  • Packaging of textile and apparel products
  • Protecting spare parts and metal products from moisture and dust
  • Inner packaging for chemicals and granules
  • General protection in warehouse and logistics operations
