What Is a Doypack? Features, Options and Applications

What is a doypack (stand-up pouch), which products suit it, and which options like zippers, valves and windows are available?

Most of the flexible pouches that stand upright on supermarket shelves, with their front panel fully displaying the brand, are doypacks. Far lighter than glass jars or cartons, this format has become the standard in many categories, from nuts to detergents.

What keeps a doypack upright: the bottom gusset

A doypack has an inward-folded gusset at the bottom. When the product is filled, this gusset opens and gives the pouch a base to stand on. The product can therefore be displayed on the shelf and stays upright in the consumer’s kitchen.

Material structure: it depends on the product

Doypacks are usually made from a multi-layer (laminated) structure. Each layer has a role:

  • Outer layer: Carries the print and provides resistance against external impact.
  • Middle layer: Creates a barrier against moisture, oxygen, light and aroma, depending on the product’s needs.
  • Inner layer: The sealing layer that is in contact with the product.

A dry product and a highly moisture-sensitive powder do not have the same needs. That is why at Porpack the structure is determined by the journey your product takes from production to the shelf.

Options that can be added

What makes the doypack so powerful is how easily it can be tailored:

  • Zipper: Consumers can open and close the pack several times while freshness is preserved.
  • Tear notch: Easy opening without scissors.
  • One-way valve: Used for products that release gas, such as freshly roasted coffee.
  • Hang hole: Allows the product to be displayed on hanging racks.
  • Window: Makes the product visible from the outside.
  • Matte / gloss finish: Matte and gloss areas can be combined in the same design for a premium look.

Which products is it suited for?

  • Nuts, dried fruit and snacks
  • Coffee and tea
  • Spices, flour and powdered drinks
  • Pet food and treats
  • Powder and capsule detergents
  • Garden products such as seeds and fertilizer

What a doypack brings to your business

Logistics savings: Empty doypacks ship flat and take up much less storage and transport space than jars or boxes.

Shelf impact: The wide front panel works like an advertising space where the brand speaks directly to the consumer.

A single-pack solution: It often eliminates the need for labels, extra boxes or filling material.

Frequently asked questions

Can doypacks be filled on automatic machines? Yes. Pre-made pouch filling machines automatically open, fill and seal doypacks. Smaller producers can use semi-automatic or manual filling.

Is a zippered doypack more expensive? The zipper requires additional material and processing, so it increases the unit cost. Doypacks without zippers are preferred for products consumed in one go, and zippered versions for products used multiple times.

What is the minimum order for printed doypacks? At Porpack, the minimum order for printed products is 300 kg. Tiered pricing applies as the quantity increases.
